AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9970X

32C/64T · 5.4 GHz · 350 W

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9970X is a 32-core, 64-thread high-end desktop processor based on the Zen 5 architecture, codenamed Shimada Peak, announced at Computex on May 20, 2025 and shipping from July 31, 2025 for the sTR5 socket and TRX50 chipset. It runs at a 4.0 GHz base clock and boosts up to 5.4 GHz within a 350 W TDP, combining four TSMC 4 nm core dies with a 6 nm I/O die for a total of 32 MB of L2 and 128 MB of L3 cache. The platform provides quad-channel DDR5-6400 ECC RDIMM memory up to 1 TB and 92 native PCI Express lanes, of which 88 are usable and up to 80 run at PCIe 5.0, giving creators, developers and AI workstations bandwidth for multi-GPU and high-speed storage configurations. Fully unlocked for overclocking with Precision Boost Overdrive, Curve Optimizer and AMD EXPO support, and with full 512-bit-wide AVX-512 execution, the 9970X launched at a suggested price of USD 2,499.

Notes
AMD lists Windows 11 64-bit, Windows 10 64-bit, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu as supported. Microsoft names the Ryzen Threadripper 9000 Series on the Windows 11 25H2 processor list, and 24H2 and 26H2 share the same requirements. Fedora and Arch are not on the AMD list but are supported through the generic x86-64 kernel.
