The AMD Ryzen 5 1600 is a mainstream desktop processor from AMD's original Zen-architecture Ryzen 1000 series (codename Summit Ridge), launched April 11, 2017. It was one of the first sub-$220 mainstream chips to offer 6 cores and 12 threads, undercutting Intel's contemporary Core i5 lineup on multi-threaded price-performance and helping kick off the core-count race that reshaped the desktop CPU market. Built on GlobalFoundries' 14nm process, it runs at a 3.2 GHz base clock with boost up to 3.6 GHz, backed by 3 MB of L2 cache and 16 MB of shared L3 cache. It supports dual-channel DDR4 memory up to roughly DDR4-2666 and uses AMD's AM4 socket platform, which went on to support multiple generations of Ryzen upgrades on the same motherboards. With a fully unlocked multiplier and a modest 65W TDP, the Ryzen 5 1600 became a favorite among budget gamers and content creators for its overclocking headroom and long-term value on AM4.
