Intel Core 2 Duo T6400

2C/2T · 35 W

The Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 is an entry-level dual-core mobile processor from the 45 nm Penryn generation, introduced in January 2009 as the cheapest way to put a Core 2 Duo into a mainstream notebook. Both cores run at 2.00 GHz with no turbo, share 2 MB of L2 cache and talk to the chipset over an 800 MHz front-side bus, inside the standard 35 W mobile thermal envelope. The 2 MB cache is the main concession to price, cut down from the 3 MB and 6 MB configurations higher up the range, and it costs perceptible performance in compilation and content creation while barely showing in office work. Enhanced Intel SpeedStep, SSE4.1 and Intel 64 are all present. Because the memory controller sits in the chipset rather than on the die, supported memory depends on the notebook, typically dual-channel DDR2 or DDR3 on a Mobile Intel 4 Series board.

Notes
Windows 11 is out of reach: Penryn is far below the 8th-generation floor on Microsoft's supported-processor list and the platform offers no TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot. Windows 10 and the mainstream Linux distributions still install, because they are built for the x86-64 baseline, but the CPU has no SSE4.2 or POPCNT, so any software that requires x86-64-v2 or newer will not run. ChromeOS Flex does not cover hardware of this era.
