Intel Core i7-3820 Processor

4C/8T · 3.8 GHz · 130 W

The most affordable way into Intel's enthusiast LGA 2011 platform, released in early 2012. It gives up the six cores of the Core i7-3930K and 3960X above it but keeps what makes the X79 platform attractive: a quad-channel memory controller and the full complement of PCI Express lanes for multi-GPU and workstation builds. Its multiplier is only partially unlocked, so overclocking leans mainly on the base-clock straps.

Notes
Sandy Bridge-E does not appear on any Windows 11 supported-processor list, so Windows 10 is the newest officially supported Windows release. Microsoft has not published a separate processor list for Windows 11 26H2, so the 25H2 result is carried over. Current Ubuntu, Fedora and Arch releases still run: the core provides SSE4.2, POPCNT and AVX, meeting the x86-64-v2 baseline. ChromeOS Flex does not cover hardware of this era.
