AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X

32C/64T · 4.5 GHz · 280 W

The Ryzen Threadripper 3970X is a 32-core, 64-thread high-end desktop processor from AMD's third Threadripper generation (Castle Peak), announced on November 7, 2019 at $1,999 and released on November 25, 2019. It uses four fully enabled eight-core Zen 2 chiplets around a 12 nm I/O die, and with the 3960X it introduced the sTRX4 socket and TRX40 platform, which is not compatible with earlier X399 motherboards but adds PCIe 4.0 throughout.

Notes
AMD supported Windows 10 64-bit and Linux for this processor. Microsoft's Windows 11 24H2 supported-processor list includes only the Threadripper PRO models of this generation, but the 25H2 list names the Ryzen Threadripper 3000 Series, so Windows 11 is officially supported from 25H2; no separate 26H2 list has been published, so the 25H2 status is carried over. Zen 2 is supported by mainline Linux kernels, so current Ubuntu, Fedora and Arch releases run normally.
